Missa Vestiva i colli (Baldassare Vialardo)

    MUSICA FIORITA, BASEL, DANIELA DOLCI

Besides the aforesaid composers the recording focuses on the premiere recording of a Mass by Baldassare Vialardo (d. after 1620), Maestro di Cappella active in Milan. It is a late example of a parody on 'Vestiva i colli': an ideal recapitulation of the different genres and styles on this CD, in an intense musical experimentation.

Six Cantatas; Orpheus & Euridice (William Hayes)

THE SCHOLA CANTORUM BASILIENSIS PLAYERS, ANTHONY ROOLEY

Anthony Rooley and his carefully-chosen group of singers and instrumentalists linked to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis here give us, following on from their dazzling 2010 reading of The Passions, a fresh new incursion into the previously littleknown compositional world of William Hayes, in this way contributing to Hayes’s deserved placement once again as one of the leading contemporaries of Handel.

  • Vespro della Beata Virgine (G.P. Cima)

    AUDIO RECORDING (PAN CLASSICS)

Vespro della Beata Virgine (G.P. Cima)

    MUSICA FIORITA, BASEL, DANIELA DOLCI

Daniela Dolci and Musica Fiorita have put together a Vespro della Beata Virgine from this material – modelled after the famous Maria Vespers of his contemporary Monteverdi which, interestingly, also appeared in the year 1610. It shows that the development of the new seconda prattica was not the sole invention of Monteverdi, but a trend of the period in which Cima's music definitely bears comparison with his famous contemporary.

    AUDIO RECORDING (GLOSSA)

Missa Ecco Si Beato Giorno (A.Striggio)

LE CONCERT SPIRITUEL, PARIS, HERVÉ NIQUET

And who better than the famous French countertenor Visse himself to be drawn into that circle as one of the 60 singers! Added in, for good measure, for this programme of Florentine flamboyance from the Renaissance and Baroque - which Niquet will be continuing to tour in 2012 - are polyphonic arrangements of Gregorian plainchant Mass Propers by Franceso Corteccia, maestro di cappella in the Cathedral of Florence in Striggio’s time.

  • Gloria (A.Vivaldi)

    AUDIO RECORDING (ANALEKTA)

    Gloria (A.Vivaldi)

    ENSEMBLE CAPRICE, MONTREAL, MATTHIAS MAUTE

The effect is stunning, as can be heard in the movements Et in terra pax (Gloria RV 589) and Et misericordia eius (Magnificat RV 610). According to reports written at the time, sometimes members of the audience at La Pietà would cry and cheer enthusiastically during the performances of the most accomplished singers.

  • Magnificats (Pierre de la Rue)

    AUDIO RECORDING (NAXOS)

    Magnificats (Pierre de la Rue)

    VIVA VOCE, MONTREAL, PETER SCHUBERT

At the turn of the 15th century, Pierre de La Rue was the leading composer working north of the Alps. A member of the Habsburg-Burgundian chapel, he composed polyphony for all the major liturgical genres. This is the first recording of La Rue’s seven surviving Magnificats as well as three of his six settings of the Salve Regina, one of which quotes chansons by Dufay and Binchois. Varied voicing, surprising tonal relationships and contrasting textures make each setting distinct. La Rue’s mastery of old and new musical styles endows these pieces with great expressive force.
